We like to think of "eating the right way” as “eating the Proof Smart way” and one of the most important parts about eating and living the Proof Smart way is balance. Balance is the #1 thing we focus on: balance in diet, work, recreation, and relationships.
“A balanced diet” has been grossly misused over the last thirty years, mostly by developers of the food pyramid and companies in the business of pushing high-profit, zero-nutrition, sugar-filled cereals. It’s been a long time coming but I’m happy to announce that Proof Smart Food is taking “a balanced diet” back. We love a balanced diet and we think that phrase deserves to be returned to the glory that it always deserved. It is an excellent way to describe the kind of dietary habits that are the core concept of eating to support a long life and an active lifestyle.
A balanced diet is what we’re after. But what does that mean? I told my 87 year old father 15 years ago when he was becoming one of the brave and fortunate souls who pioneered the Proof Smart lifestyle: Eat whole foods. That means real foods. Real foods don’t HAVE ingredients - real foods ARE ingredients. No refined sugar or carbs. The litmus test is color. If it’s white, don’t eat it. Eat more protein. Do not be afraid of fats. Fats make your brain work and other systems in your body too. The worst thing that ever happened to fat was being called “fat”. Don’t I forgot about balance? I didn’t. It’s your life so enjoy it. Build in a little room for non-sanctioned foods, use the 80/20 rule. Eat to live the Proof Smart lifestyle 80% of the time, 20% of the time, don’t get hung up on it.
Same for the gym. Exercise is critically important for health and wellness and to maximize our output when exercising. Exercise gets a bad reputation for reasons that were not entirely clear at the time of this blog’s publication. We DO know that one of the best and easiest ways to change exercising's bad reputation is by getting off the elliptical and onto the court. Or field. Or “pitch.” The key to finding the right balance is by finding your blend of cardio and resistance training. The ratio will vary depending on your personal fitness goals. But make it fun.
If we eat to train, then we train to spend time with our families. I live the Proof Smart lifestyle, I train on the days when I’d rather hit the snooze bar, and I started this company for this. Time is the most precious commodity we have and that is never clearer to me than when I’m with my girls. I treasure the special moments I’ve had with those girls. They are more valuable to me than money or my bodybuilding titles or the companies I’ve built. Take time to be with the people you love. If you don’t have the time, make the time. In the Hogarty family, we love including exercise and eating a balanced diet into family activities. Everyone has a great time and its’ all part of living the Proof Smart lifestyle.
The fourth piece of this balancing act is work. What you do on the job is just as important as what you do in the gym or in the kitchen. That means minding your physical safety of course but it also means leaving work where it belongs - at the office. Do what you can to limit work-related stress and try not to let your professional life encroach on the living of actual life.
